Latino Students Parent Dinner

On September 23rd, the Latino Advisory Council consisting of eighteen Latino students and Dr. Jack Lilley, Youth OutReach Coordinator sponsored a Latino Parent's Night. The evening featured a Mexican dinner and program including Superintendent, Dr. Dan Bertrand and Principal, Scott Shepard as well as the rest of the adminstrative team and Director of Guidance, Natasha Schultz. Over 220 parents and family members attended. Members of the Latino Advisory Council performed several skits and members of the Multi-cultural Club served the dinner. The night was a huge success. Thanks to all the students, Mrs. Sager and Dr. Lilley. »

MCHS CHESS TEAM BEGINS SEASON #2

The MCHS Chess Team is back at it this year, and this year we’re bigger and better. With the success of last year’s team, a number of students have expressed interest in joining. We hope to field two or even three teams at competitions this year and show the conference what Marengo Indian intelligence is made of! We’re headed back to State in February, where we should place far better than we did in our inaugural season. With more experience and more talent, we will be a solid force in both our conference and at State. Students who wish to join the team should do so as soon as possible. Any student involved in fall sports should join the chess team as soon as their fall sport is over. All that’s required to join is to talk to Mr. Czerwin and make a commitment. Just be sure to join by November 11th, after which our roster needs to be finalized. See you soon! »

FFA NEWS

This year the Ag & FFA programs kicked off the new school year with a new advisor, Ms. Schessler. She’s adjusted to Marengo and the students like her, so things are going well. Ms. Schlesser grew up in Lake County and attended Libertyville High School. After high school graduation, she went to the University of Illinois, intending to become a veterinarian. During her sophomore year there, she took a class called Genetics and Animal Breeding and did an undergraduate research project studying the genetics of her family dairy farm. She enjoyed it a lot and decided to get a masters degree in Genetics and Animal Breeding. »

COOKING WITH SKILLS

Marengo Community High School’s SkillsUSA club is preparing a taste-tempting cookbook, Cooking With Skills, featuring favorite recipes from members of our community. Cooking With Skills will be beautifully illustrated and is sure to be treasured for years. »

DIGITAL ART PROGRAM EXPANDS

MCHS now offers three courses in the area of digital art. With the addition of Digital Design II last year and Photography this year, students can expand their knowledge and experiences in this area. Digital art is currently the fastest growing area for employment in the field of art and it is projected to continue growing at a fast pace for many years.

MARENGO WRESTLING HAS A SUCCESSFUL OFF-SEASON

When you think of wrestling it is normally thought of as a winter sport; however, that wasn’t the case for the Marengo High School Wrestling Team this summer. Many individuals competed in summer tournaments, camps, and state teams. Rick Goerke, Angel Botzoc, Mark Hendricks, Kyle Domski and Joey Moorhouse all competed in the National Greco Tournament held in Fargo, North Dakota. Joey placed third at the junior level, which contained mostly college freshman and high school seniors. While many individuals were at wrestling camps and tournaments, the remainder of the team stayed around Marengo and competed as a team in a summer dual team championship. The dual series was between Genoa, Hampshire, Belvidere North, and Marengo. »

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS: PARTIES, ALCOHOL, AND UNDERAGE HIGH SCHOOL CHILDREN

Parents Who Host Lose the Most

• Parents, please be responsible in sponsoring “No Alcohol Parties” for your underage high school children.

• Teenage drinking has both health and legal ramifications: You can be sued. Please do not facilitate underage drinking at parties.

Parents Should Know

• You cannot give alcohol to your child’s friends under 21 years of age under any circumstances, even in your own home.

• You can’t knowingly allow a person under 21 to remain on your property while consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages.

• If you break this law, you face a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to 365 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

• You can be sued civilly if anyone gets hurt as a result of your alcohol party as well as be charged with a Class 4 felony. »

WELCOME AFS STUDENTS

This year we are pleased to have Maria Bignami from Italy and Helena Brandeo from Portugal as students at MCHS. We would like to welcome them to our high school. »

BOOK FAIR AT MCHS

The MCHS Reading Club and AFS are having a Book Fair on October 26 – 29, 2009, at the Marengo High School. All types of books will be available, fiction and non-fiction, from children’s classics to teen lit, and more.

The Book Fair will be in the Media Center on Monday and Tuesday, October 26-27; hours will be from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm. Students can shop at the Book Fair, and the public is also welcome.

On Wednesday and Thursday, October 28-29, the Book Fair will be in the Commons during Parent/Teacher conferences. Hours will be from 12:30 – 8:00 pm. The Book Fair is a fundraiser for AFS and the Reading Club, and we hope to earn many new books for the Media Center. See you at the Book Fair! »

MARENGO MADHOUSE

This year the Multicultural Club and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) are teaming up to host a haunted house over Halloween weekend. The event will be held in the bus barn, behind Marengo Middle School, on Friday, October 30th and Saturday, October 31st from 7 pm until 10 pm and Sunday, November 1st from 4 pm until 7 pm. The event is student organized and student led. The cost for admission is $6 or $5 with a non-perishable food or hygiene item to be donated to M.O.R.E. All profits from the haunted house will benefit the clubs, which will then be used to fund leadership opportunities and charitable donations to Marengo area charities. K-Mart/Sears has generously donated supplies and money for the construction of the haunted house which has been vital to the success of the development of our hair-raising event. Please come out and join us, that is, if you are not too scared! »

VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

Marengo Community High School will be hosting a Veterans Day Program on Wednesday, November 11th at 9:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. Veterans and their families are invited to attend. Students from Locust Elementary, Marengo Middle, Riley, Zion Lutheran and Marengo Community High School will be participating in the program. Local veterans will be receiving invitations in the mail and everyone from the community is invited to attend. A reception for all veterans and their families will follow the program. Please come out and show your support for our Veterans! »

STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS by Amanda Kenny and Hannah Voss

Welcome back MCHS students! Student Council is excited about this year, and we hope you are too. We have had a great turnout with many new members, who have already brainstormed hundreds of fresh, spirited ideas. We have elected our 2009-2010 officers and expanded our executive board. Jessica Williams has taken the gavel and will be our very busy president. Kailey Draves is right behind her in the seat of vice president. Nicole Worrell will be taking our minutes as the secretary. And last, but not least are Hannah Voss and Amanda Kenny, in charge of public relations. We have added one student from each class to the group of officers to create an executive board. Chelsea Bullen will represent the senior class; Melissa Looby the juniors; Sara Miller will represent the sophomore class and Bailey LaSota the freshmen. We meet every Tuesday morning, so if you have any suggestions or ideas, feel free to let any officer or member know.

Homecoming is coming! Our theme is TIME WARP and it could turn out to be a history lesson for all of us. Activities will span the ages from Prehistoric days to the Future. The week will kick off with an assembly on Friday, September 25 to pump everybody up and culminate with the dance on Saturday, October 3.

MCHS BOOT CAMP

"Okay Cole, drop and give me 10!"¯ While this does not sound like an English class, it was, in fact, an English class...sort of. On the first "Late Start"¯ day of the year, the English department held a "Boot Camp"¯ in order to bring all the freshmen together and orient them to the demands of high school English. Entering from three different grade schools presents challenges for both teachers and students in terms of background and habits. After developing the MCHS Style Handbook, each teacher made a brief presentation on everything from plagiarism and policy to the proper heading for papers. Wearing camouflage t-shirts and sounding remarkably like drill sergeants, the English department guaranteed that each freshman at MCHS will get off on the right foot"¦.hut, hut, one, two, three, four, hut, hut"¦. »
